Alex's Flying Trips

Sacramento McClellan(MCC)

Apr. 26, 2008: Napa (APC) - Sacramento McClellan(MCC) - Napa

McClellan is my favorite Sacramento area airport to land.
I typically land here on weekends and feels as if I have the airport all to myself; I was told though that it's busy on weekdays. As a former military base, it a big airport with long and wide runways. It's non-towered under the Sacramento Class C airspace. And for navigation, it has a VOR on the field. If landing for the first time, have a taxi diagram handy. This is a huge airport and you will be taxiing long to get to the FBO --- and no one can give you progressive(non-towered).

It has a nice FBO (McClellan Jet Services) open 24 hours with friendly staff, clean restrooms, and pilot lounge. No landing fees for transients. On weekends, a crew car is typically available. No restaurant on site but you can use the crew car for that. Avgas is not the cheapest here but I let them top off at times for letting me use the crew car. It's also located within the businesses I normally take care in the Sacramento area.
The trusty C172 in the McClellan ramp:
Feels like I have entire airport to myself on this weeekend.
The painted pathway to the FBO.
The crew car:
The interior shows its age but clean, runs great and you can't beat the price --- free! As a courtesy to the next user, gas it up before returning.
The FBO entrance from the parking lot. It's normally closed and the staff inside have to buzz you in.
I also drove by the Rio Linda airport nearby. A lot of parked airplanes but no one was there during my visit.

Sept. 13, 2008: Other succeeding flights to Sacramento McClellan

A typical flight to McClellan takes you over downtown Sacramento.

I think this is Sac State.

Another beautiful sunset that can only be appreciate in flight.
