Alex's Flying Trips

Nov. 21, 2008: Napa (APC) - Red Bluff(RBL) - Napa

Navigating from Napa to Red Bluff is easy. Just intercept I-5 then follow it northbound (-yup, good old fashioned "IFR"). If you arrive in Redding instead, you've gone too far.

Seemed like Red Bluff just repaved the runways. Transient parking was across the terminal building. I was not able to contact Rancho Radio FSS using the frequencies listed in the AOPA directory. I cannot find a phone booth in the airport terminal to close my flight plan; good thing there's cellphone signal.

Inside the terminal building is the airport office, a small aviation museum and restrooms. Upstairs, there's a small aviation themed restaurant, Valeighs Airpark Restaurant, serving diner type food --- burgers and fries (well, those were what I ordered and I can't remember what else was on the menu). The staff were friendly. Service, food and prices were good. It has a good window view to the runways. I believe they close at 2pm. There were also restrooms outside the terminal building facing the ramp.

As I refueled at the self service, the guy from the office came out saying something like the self service station has problem taking credit cards. After refueling, he took my credit card inside the office for processing. So, I had to push my C172 out of the way from the fueling station, walked inside the office to complete the credit card processing, and walked back to the plane for takeoff. He did mention that he gave me some discount. I'm not sure how this will work out if the office is close and you want to refuel with your credit card.
Red Bluff Airport Terminal:
A small aviation museum and airport office were inside. I can't find a phone booth and have to use my cell phone to close my flight plan (-since I was not able to contact Rancho Radio FSS). There were restrooms inside and outside the building (right side of this picture).

Valieghs Airpart Restaurant is upstairs and you need to go inside the terminal building to get upstairs.
Valeighs Airpark Restaurant serves diner type food -- burgers and fries. Staff were friendly; service, food and prices were good. They had a lot of customers during my visit. The interior was decorated with aviation themed articles.
Window view of the runway from the restaurant.
Airport terminal from the parking lot outside.
Terminal building lobby facing the door to ramp. The small aviation museum is at right; airport office is at left.
Me getting ready for the return flight.
I've been flying around this area but just noticed this peculiar ridge formation near Lake Berryessa. This is one great thing about flying --- you'll always find something new from the air.
Approaching Lake Berreyssa at the left, a waypoint for my return flight to Napa.
