Alex's Flying Trips

Ukiah(UKI)

Aug. 13, 2011: Napa (APC) - Ukiah (UKI)

Ukiah was just half-an-hour cross country flight from Napa. Flying direct took take the flight path over the Sonama mountain ranges. The view at cruising level of 6,500' was beautiful because of diversity in the landscape. I flew over the mountainous terrain in Sonoma, but closeby, I can also view the sprawling flat lands around Santa Rosa area. And further north, I can view Clear Lake. Unfortunately for this trip, I was not able to bring my camera. Pictures below are from my cellphone --- this will do.

Despite being nestled in a valley, Ukiah airport has wider clearances from the terrain unlike the nearby Boonville which is also located in a valley but with tighter, narrower terrain clearances. This is an nontowered airport but has an AWOS. I picked to land Rwy 33 and was a bit surprised by the tall trees at short final that I have to go around. The airport was clean and seemed well maintained. There were several transient parking with rope tie-downs in front of the administration building. No SS fuel station but a line person came over to check if I need fuel. And since the fuel price was cheaper than Napa, I said yes and he brought a fuel truck. It's a very active airport with several GA planes parked in the ramp. Every few minutes, there's someone taking off, or landing. During this trip, there were two CDF air tankers taking off to fight some wildfires around the Sonoma/Napa mountains.

It was alot warmer in Ukiah when I arrived. Good thing, inside the Administration Building was cool with vending machines and clean restrooms. Since I wanted to taste some local flavor, I end up eating some tacos in a Mexican grocery across the airport. The grocery has an outdoor BBQ patio serving Mexican foods. It seemed popular since several people were dropping by to eat. There's also a burger/shakes diner across the airport but was closed when I arrived.

Also across the airport is a diner serving burgers and shakes. They were closed that afternoon when I arrived.

Revisited Ukiah for few days in July 2012 as base for exploring Mendocino:

Used N2565U in this revisit; it was safe and taken cared of as it was tied down at the airport ramp for few days.
Took the time to explore the town and nearby towns...
...including the Mendocino coast.
