Alex's Flying Trips

Half Moon Bay (HAF)

Oct. 13, 2011: Napa (APC) - Half Moon Bay (HAF)

It's my birthday. And with a clear weather forecast, I decided to take a day off and go flying. I always wanted to go to Half Moon Bay airport; it's one of the most popular fly-in destinations in Northern California. But since the airport is along the coast, it is covered by fog at times. But the forecast says no fog today, so Half Moon Bay is it!

The Piper Archer II(65U) was not available today; it has become my preferred plane when flying solo. I use the club Cessna C172 (858) this time. Since I have not flown the Cessna for awhile, I flew the first leg to Petaluma (O69) to reorient myself with the plane. From Petaluma, I rechecked the ATIS in SFO and AWOS in HAF, and finalized the flight plan.

The plan was to fly from Petaluma over Gnoss (DVO), then to Sausalito VOR (SAU) at 2,000 feet, then drop below the SFO Class B along the coast at 1,400 feet. Norcal Approach was very busy so I just monitored the frequency but did not call. The weather was extremely clear with calm winds. After SAU, the flight was pretty much direct south to HAF along the coast with good view of the San Francisco Bay.

The airport of Half Moon Bay is actually in the town of Princeton. The town of Half Moon Bay is still few miles south of Princeton. As expected on clear days, traffic to HAF was busy but everyone were good in announcing their positions. After landing, I taxied all the way to the south of the airport where several tie-downs can be found. There's also a walk path to the town harbor with several dining options (-just remember the gate code to reenter gate).

Walk path to the town of Princeton from the south end of the airport.
The very first restaurant coming out of the airport gate.
Pillar Point Harbor
Cross street to Hwy. 1. The actual town of Half Moon Bay is few more miles south of Princeton.
Pillar Point Harbor entrance.
I end up eating here; quick service and good shrimp and crab sandwich.
The famous Maverick Surf Shop.
Must be a popular eating place by the number of people waiting to get in.
Half Moon Bay Brewing Company; one of the many dining options in the area.
A waypoint landmark for pilots.
What a great day on the beach!
The Devil's Slide tunnel construction.
San Francisco's Baker Beach with the Golden Gate at the distance on the return flight.
