Alex's Flying Trips

Petaluma Revisited

Aug. 18, 2014: Petaluma Revisited (O69)

I flew here often in Petaluma. It's my favorite practice airport --- if I have not flown for awhile, I land here to brush up pattern work, do some touch and goes, and brush up radio communications. At times, I also land here to check on the plane airworthiness before going for a long cross country trip. And at times, I land here just because the scenery is great above the Sonama Valley and it's a short hop from my base airport.

However, at times, this could be a very busy non-towered airport. This is a popular stopover after a bay tour for planes coming from south of San Francisco, or from the Oregon area before heading towards San Francisco. It has everything for a typical stopover airport --- a maintenance shop, a popular airport diner, and typically lower avgas from nearby class D airports. And it now has an AWOS at 132.325 since at times, visibility could be low due to marine layer from the coast.

This is where most of the activity is going on in Petaluma airport. It houses the flight school, the maintenance shop, and a popular airport diner.
The airport diner, Two Niner Diner, is aviation themed inside.
The diner serves great diner type food --- burgers, sandwiches, shakes and malts; for hungry avaitors, those fills the spot. It's also popular among the locals. It only serves breakfast and lunch; closes at 3pm, and not open on Mondays.

And the ramp can be busy at times, particularly on weekends with clear skies.
