Psalm 46:10(a)
"Be still, and know that I am God;..."
I believe God is still speaking, and may opt to speak to us in various ways.
Psalms 29 in the bible describes God’s voice
with loud thunder and flashes of lightning. Yet, in Kings 19, it tells the story of prophet Elijah,
while expecting a message from God, witnessed powerful winds, followed by a rumbling earthquake,
then a roaring fire --- but God was not there in any of these loud, noisy events.
Instead, God communicated with Elijah in a whisper.
If we expect God to speak to us in some dramatic fashion --- maybe
something flashy or loud --- we might miss it. God may decide
to speak to us quietly --- in a whisper.
In today’s world, we are constantly surrounded with noises competing for our attention.
From the morning news, to our daily commute, the hustle and bustle at school or in our workplace, zoom meetings,
notifications from our cellphones. When we take a break, we plug our wireless
headsets to listen to our playlist, or check the number of views of the video we just posted,
or catch up with our favorite podcaster.
When we get home, we multi-task with earbuds in our ears while going about the house
or while doing homework, or
we turn on the home theater system to watch our favorite sports team, or play against someone
in an online game, or catch the latest episode of a movie stream.
God may have been trying to speak to us but his voice has been drowned by these
noises around us.
Let’s not forget to set aside time to unplug from all these noises and be quiet ---
acknowledging God’s ever presence and lordship in our lives.
We might just hear him.
